About the book:

Orkney, 1940. Five hundred Italian prisoners-of-war arrive to fortify these remote and windswept islands.

Resentful islanders are fearful of the enemy in their midst, but not orphaned twin sisters Dorothy and Constance. Already outcasts, they volunteer to nurse all prisoners who are injured or fall sick.

Soon Dorothy befriends Cesare, an artist swept up by the machine of war and almost broken by the horrors he has witnessed. She is entranced by his plan to build an Italian chapel from war scrap and sea debris, and something beautiful begins to blossom.

Soon, trust frays between the islanders and outsiders, and between the sisters - their hearts torn by rival claims of duty and desire.

What I thought:

That Blurb drew me in straight away! I've had The Metal Heart on my radar for months but, knowing I had The Glass Woman on my tbr, I decided I should read that first. After loving The Glass Woman, I was extremely lucky to win a signed proof copy from the author, Caroline Lea!

Historical fiction is one of my favourite genres but I specifically love books set in the war. It's said that war brings out the best and worst in people and I think this novel really shows that.

The writing is beautiful and Cesare, my favourite character, is gorgeous. I really felt for the twins who are still very young. Dorothy is very brave and loving and Constance is very protective.

It's difficult to discuss the book further without spoilers but if you're a historical fiction fan, you'll love The Metal Heart. Make sure you follow Caroline's instagram account as she has shared many

photos of places that inspired the book and it's wonderful to be able to connect those photos with the story. Orkney is now definitely on my travel list!
